In 1952, Annie Ross wrote and recorded "Twisted," a vocalese standard-to-be that set tongue-twisting lyrics to a swirling melody adapted from a Wardell Gray saxophone solo. She later enjoyed immense success in the singing, swinging Lambert, Hendricks & Ross group, contributing another labyrinthine original, "Farmer's Market," and blending buoyantly into the trio's lyrical adaptations of instrumental solos. While innovatively harmonized tunes like "Come On Home" launched her career, the touching "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" and the lovely late-career "Lush Life" show her skill with standards.
