They only scored one Top 40 single, 1966 garage-punk anthem "Seven & Seven Is." But as Hollywood's rock scene moved from folk-rock into psychedelia, Love were the hippest band on the Sunset Strip. Frontman Arthur Lee's scowling charisma and dark lyrical themes gave an unsettling edge even to the prettiest songs on Love and Da Capo. 1967's legendary Forever Changes is a paranoid yet beautiful wreck regularly cited as one of the greatest LPs of the '60s; it was the original lineup's farewell. By the time of Lee's 2006 death, Love were recognized as psychedelic heroes.
