Eclectic mastermind Matt Johnson's group The The got their start in the UK in the late '70s playing alongside post-punk bands like Wire and Cabaret Voltaire, whose influence rubbed off on early records like Soul Mining. As the project evolved, Johnson embraced alt-rock and channeled his moody sound in a more accessible direction. He worked with Johnny Marr of The Smiths on The The's 1989 classic Mind Bomb, and in 1995 he paid tribute to Hank Williams with Hanky Panky, a collection of covers of the country legend's work. In the '10s, he turned to writing soundtracks.
