Rarely has a voice audibly illustrated the full life of a singer quite like that of Marianne Faithfull. The plaintive, quavering folk purity of her early ‘60s songs (“Come My Way”) quickly gave way to the more astringent, experienced rasp of “Sister Morphine” and the husky deep glow of authority in “Why'd Ya Do It?”. “Give My Love To London” from 2014 sees her knowingly croak her way around her old haunts, while on “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,” that hard-earned wisdom is put to immaculate use, as she becomes the outraged narrator of a domestic tragedy.
