British pop fractured in the late ‘80s, and few acts bridged that divide quite like The Beloved. On their 1986 debut single “This Means War” and 1987’s Where It Is album, post-punk and dream pop resonated in their ringing chords and muscular rhythm section. By 1988—UK rave’s year zero—the quartet had become a duo and traded guitars for electronics. With “The Sun Rising”, they greeted the dawning new era with Gregorian-chant samples over ambient-techno grooves, and they’d spend the ’90s perfecting their blissed-out vision of rave pop, pairing buoyant synths with singer Jon Marsh’s purring tenor.
