Album - Hip-Hop, Music, Hip-Hop/Rap
The two moody Ohioans have been trading features for years: Trippie appeared on mgk’s last traditional rap album, 2019’s Hotel Diablo, and on his pop-punk pivot, 2020’s Tickets to My Downfall. But genre : sadboy marks the noted sulkers’ first full-length collaboration, which does exactly what it says on the tin: 10 tracks of warbly, wallowy emo rap in which the artists wage war with their various demons (depression, addiction, themselves). On the Frou Frou-sampling “beauty,” mgk joneses for a hit of anything, restless in the suburbs, while Trippie contributes the bone-chilling chorus, “Hope this wasn’t fentanyl…” Slightly less relatable is his hook on “suddenly” (“Have you ever fuckin’ cried in a limousine?”), but if there’s anything the album makes clear, it’s that fame, fortune, and happiness don’t mix.
