Rybeena
Mr Bee
Album · Afrobeats · 2025
Lack of resources and institutional neglect have historically powered street-pop, but rising star Rybeena is less preoccupied with these obstacles than he is determined to deliver a fuller picture of life in Nigeria’s ghettos and inner cities. Fans were put on notice with the March 2025 arrival of Virtuoso, a densely layered release that found the singer (born Adewale Atanda) painting a panoramic picture of where he was from, framed by his own endless ambition.
It was hardly a surprise then, when Rybeena caught a nationwide hit with “Gaddem,” a buoyant collaboration with fellow rising street-pop star Shoday. The single is the lodestar for Mr Bee, a thrilling expansion of Rybeena’s artistry rife with both soul and highlife. The EP is the sound of life getting sweeter, Rybeena, going all out for a love interest on “Adunni” with Afropop star Joeboy. And on “G.wagon,” he doubles down on that lifestyle, reeling off a list of luxurious gifts for a lover. In between references to jaunts across the world and his latest acquisitions, Rybeena embodies the street-smart musings and humor that broke him out with Virtuoso. He can make a case for patience and steadfastness on “Dewale,” cheerily explain his reliance on the sweet leaf on “Ganja,” or tap into apala influences as he does on the groovy “Rain.” Rybeena may just be getting started, but it’s clear that Mr Bee is buzzing.
