Artist Biography
Isle of Wight five-piece psych-pop band Plastic Mermaids use layers of synths and samples to craft an off-center sound.
At first, brothers Jamie and Douglas Richards enlisted guitarist Chris Newham to form an electro punk trio known as Magic Octagon. As their tastes developed, they changed their direction toward softer psychedelia, giving them the impetus to drop Magic Octagon in favor of Plastic Mermaids. They attempted to perform as a trio, using a drum machine and synths, but found it difficult to translate their sound on-stage. Thus they enlisted bassist Tom Farren and drummer Chris Jones to round out the group. Their debut EP, Dromtorp, arrived in 2014, preceding two more, 2015's Inhale the Universe and 2016's Everything Is Yellow and Yellow Is My Least Favourite Colour. They had expanded their live show significantly by 2017, placing importance on visual aspects including the use of costumes, lasers, and glitter cannons. This flair for performance attracted the attention of Wayne Coyne, who upon seeing them live approached them about collaborating, which started with the band making a custom guitar pedal for Coyne. They signed to Sunday Best Records in 2018, going on to release their debut full-length, Suddenly Everyone Explodes, on the label in 2019. ~ Liam Martin
