Cleffy formally entered the musical arena in 2023 with the chilling, astonishing “Meet you at the Graveyard.” With its fingerpicked guitar and whispery trap beats, the song hovers in a disembodied realm between Juice WRLD and Bon Iver. It’s a haunting song of mourning for the friend Australian singer-songwriter Samuel Maunge lost to suicide. The stream-of-consciousness style of the lyrics only partly conceals their underlying poetry. Cleffy had built an online following by sharing his musical development, and the song became a viral hit when released. That same year, he released his debut album, Clean Sheets, dirty walls, which further explored themes of suicide and depression over a strangely soothing combination of spectral folk and trap. “Hide Behind My Disguise” and other songs from the album have become anthems for those who are struggling to cope with grief and loss.
