A staple of the Athens, Georgia, indie scene since the late '80s, Five Eight play urgent, emotionally raw rock with a melancholic spirit. In their heyday, the band toured relentlessly, playing with acts like R.E.M., Cheap Trick, and the Ramones while releasing standout albums like Weirdo (1994), Gasolina (1997), and The Good Nurse (2000). Despite their efforts, mainstream success largely eluded them, and over subsequent decades, Five Eight's status matured into that of a classic American cult band. Still active well into the 21st century, albeit at a less prolific clip than before. 2011's Your God Is Dead to Me Now was well-received as a late-career comeback, and their 2017 double album, Songs for St. Jude, became one of their most acclaimed. A documentary film, Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight, premiered in 2024 and was followed a year later by singles including "Take Me to the Skate Park."
