The success of the UK boy band Five can be explained first by pedigree—they were formed and managed by the same father-son duo that put together the Spice Girls—and then by perfect timing. The quintet (whose name is sometimes styled as 5ive) emerged at the height of the late-’90s teen-pop boom and landed a worldwide hit in 1998 with the sleek dance-pop single “When the Lights Go Out.” Using a combination of slick choreography and pinpoint harmonies, Five continued to amass loyal fans and bigger hits. In the UK, both 1999’s feel-good, psychedelic-pop-tinged “Keep On Movin’” and a hip-hop-influenced cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” topped the singles chart. After splitting in 2001, Five reunited as a quartet in 2013 for a TV documentary and a series of well-received tours. Another comeback, this time as a trio, followed in 2021, buoyed by a pair of funky, disco-electro throwbacks, “Making Me Fall” and “Shangri-La.”
