i-dle refuses to be siloed into any societal norms. It starts with the nameâthe â(G)â in the K-pop girl groupâs name stands for âgirlâ but is pronounced silently, a reflection of the Seoul-based quintetâs aim to be known beyond its public-facing identity. (G)I-DLEâs bold, defiant pop music shatters expectations with every release, whether through the gender-rebellious rock of âTOMBOYâ or the booming electro-house anthem âSuper Lady.â Taking inspiration from feminist icons both historical and fictitious, (G)I-DLEâMiyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhuaâboth pokes fun at and confronts public perceptions of femininity. Since debuting in 2018 with the tropical pop single âLATATA,â (G)I-DLE has released music reclaiming bimbo identities in the sassy-cute âQueencardâ and channeling Marilyn Monroeâs unabashed sexuality in the burlesque-tinged âNxde.â And in the studio, (G)I-DLE stands out among its peersâSoyeon, the groupâs fierce leader and rapper, writes and produces the majority of (G)I-DLEâs catalog, developing new music, visuals, and thematic concepts with her fellow membersâ personalities in mind.
