Artist Biography
Pablo Sáinz-Villegas was born in Logroño in the La Rioja province of Spain, but over a four-decade career his devotion to the classical guitar has taken his name—and his charismatic, intensely expressive playing—around the world. As a solo guitarist in the great Spanish classical tradition, he’s been called the heir to Andrés Segovia. Since the millennium he’s appeared in over 40 countries with artists including Plácido Domingo (with whom he recorded his 2018 album Volver) and the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. But he has always seen himself as “the people’s guitarist.” “I do what I do because I believe in, and have experienced, a better world through music in our lives,” he says, and his passion for musical education and community work is matched by his commitment to new music, with a list of world premieres that includes works by John Williams, Tomás Marco, and Sérgio Assad.
