Melbourne, Australia's Possible Humans deliver a noisy but nuanced blend of indie and post-punk in the vein of forebears such as the Clean and contemporaries like Twerps and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. On 2018's Ringwood/Ozone, they introduced their mix of chiming, twining guitars and poetic lyrics, then refined it on the following year's official debut album, Everybody Split.
The band formed in 2012 when brothers Steve, Mark, and Adam Hewitt began playing with Leon Cranswick. Soon after, Samuel Tapper joined the fold. Though their early improv sessions found the bandmembers swapping instruments, eventually Possible Humans settled on Mark on drums, Sam and Steve on vocals, and Adam and Leon handling other instrumentation. As the group worked on their music, their love of Guided by Voices, Neil Young, and Wire shaped their darkly jangly sound. Possible Humans made their debut with Toroid/Cuz, a 7" released on their friend Sam Wilkinson's Strange Pursuits label. Early in 2018, the band issued Ringwood/Ozone, a tape that showcased their loose-limbed improvisation skills. To make their first full-length, Possible Humans recorded with Alex MacFarlane, also of Twerps and the Stevens. Early in 2019, MacFarlane released the album, Everybody Split, on his Hobbies Galore imprint in a limited run of 200 copies that sold out in a day. Trouble in Mind reissued Everybody Split that August. ~ Heather Phares
