One of Europe’s most popular metal outfits, Swedish band Sabaton have spent more than two decades crafting anthemic tales of real-life heroism and military history.
∙ Formed in 1999, Sabaton took their name from medieval armor—specifically, the piece that covered a knight’s foot.
∙ The band released their debut studio album, Primo Victoria, in 2005, but it was 2008’s The Art of War that first landed them in the Top 10 of the Swedish charts.
∙ Sabaton Open Air was launched in 2008 as a one-day concert, and the event has since grown into a multiday affair that’s one of Sweden’s biggest rock festivals.
∙ Their 2012 LP, Carolus Rex, went quadruple Platinum and was followed by 2014’s Heroes, their first No. 1 album.
∙ Celebrated for their elaborate and thrilling live shows, their stage set includes an actual military tank that they’ve converted into a two-ton drum riser.
∙ In 2019, they launched an online channel, Sabaton History, where academics and experts explore the true-life stories behind their songs.
