Artist Biography
Indie popsters the Shop Assistants formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1984. With their sweet, catchy, and seemingly naive approach, the Shop Assistants were, alongside Taluluah Gosh, one of the forerunners of the twee pop movement. The popularity of their ‘85 EP SHOPPING PARADE and several singles led them to national radio sessions with the BBC’s John Peel, heightening their profile. The band’s first and only full-length, which was self-titled, was released in ‘86. The Shop Assistants broke up in ‘87. They reformed briefly in ‘89 with a slightly different line-up, then disbanded for good in 1990.
