Scottish group Shop Assistants are one of the foundational bands of classic noise-filled indie pop. Part of the C86 cassette released by the NME in 1986, the band happily married the pounding rhythms and overdriven guitars of early punk with the majestic melodies of the girl group era. Their handful of singles and 1986's Will Anything Happen album inspired many like-minded bands who followed in their wake, and while their initial run was brief, it was important. An early-'90s reunion flickered, but the group's influence remains strong decades after their demise.
