Texty

There’s a woman outside my window
She is smoking a cigarette.
Slides the door shut behind her,
Takes a moment to forget
That the life she leaves behind it
Is a life she could live without,
So she pulls another drag
Hoping that’ll help
There’s a breeze that’s gently blowing
Cool night air into my windows
And its heavy with the smoke
That the woman next door blows
The smell reminds me of my own mother
Picking me up after working late,
Though I love the woman
It’s a habit that I hate.
I’m taken to a child's eyes
Peering out a sliding glass door
Out at his mother
Wondering, what she does that for?
Memories pass by
Taking me back in time
But I see things differently now
Through a different state of mind
A different state of mind
There’s a man across the bar room
He is slouched over in his chair
With another drink in his left hand
And a blankness in his stare
As he peers into the future
Possibilities slip away
So he takes another swig
For those that remain
There’s a sign that I see glowing
Neon light into my window
And it flickers with his hope
From the bar room down below
The light reminds me of my own father
Staying out and drinking late
As I learn his lessons
I’ll avoid his fate
I’m taken to a child's eyes
Peering through the barroom door
In at his father, wondering,
What he does that for
Memories pass by
Taking me back in time
But I see things differently now
Through a different state of mind
A different state of mind
