Sammy’s got a gold band.
No money, but big plans.
He’s been saving every dime he’s touched
For months and months.
Sharon’s in a blue dress,
Hair curled, laughing,
When he gets down on one knee and says,
“Sherry, would you marry me?
I know your daddy thinks I’m rough,
And this ring, well it ain’t much.
I might not be good enough.
But I’ll keep trying.”
And she smiles…
“Better late than never.
I’ve loved you forever.
I’d have said yes the day we met,
But better late than never.”
Sammy’s home from a day of work,
Head to foot covered in dirt.
He tracks coaldust footprints down the hallway floor
To the bedroom door.
Sharon’s waited up all night.
Dogs fed, kids tucked in tight.
She says, “I left your supper covered
On the stove. It’s probably cold.”
And he says, “I thought I’d be home on time
To take you out tonight.
But honey, Happy 10th.
I’ll make it up next weekend.”
And she sighs…
“Better late than never.
I’ll love you forever.
Dates are nice, but we’ve got time.
Better late than never.
Better late than never.
I’ll love you forever.
Wash up and come on to bed.
Better late than never.”
Well 50 years go by so fast.
Thick and thin, they made it last
Until that spring when Sharon said goodbye.
As they sang those graveyard tunes,
He cried, “Love, I’ll see you soon.”
Four months later, Sammy closed his eyes.
And somewhere way up in the sky,
She smiled…
“Better late than never.
I would wait forever.
Heaven ain’t much without your love.
Better late than never.
Better late than never.
Now we’ve got forever.
Heaven ain’t much without your love,
So better late than never.
Better late than never.”
