I.
Turn — the turn — too fast I took it;
Thought I'd tumble and smash for sure
(though terrorless, that airborne second,
Back when I was bound for Heaven).
Acres wide — how dumb am I? —
Aching — quiet — drumming eyes —
Then a man storms up in the falling blue,
Man whose field I busted through.
Mom's hands on the little ones' shoulders.
I'm strapped like a ram on the altar
With no explanation why.
Man says You're in for it, guy.
Then a truck comes by with a rope or chain.
Man lets me go, and he doesn't explain,
But he takes my name and number.
(Wait all summer; no call came.)
Then I limp on as the stars advance,
Knowing He's got the whole world in His hands,
Into the woods where you're house-sitting.
How're the classes? What've you written?
Someone close to you had only died.
You fixated on a slant of light.
Then you fixed us what you called a papa doble.
We saw the morning strike the lake.
You held my face and said He will never not have been,
He will never not have been.
Then I begrudged your irreligion,
Your clothespinned watercolors swinging.
Then every time we meet that June
I'm falling to bits, I'm an unmoored moon.
You're handing Jitterbug Perfume
To everyone, and then I think I'm in love with you.
II.
So: I'm handling it badly
And I try to recall
Playing catechism in your car;
St. George; the islands in the fall
Where you reminded me
Of a thing I saw when I was very small
You reminded me
We die (or something) constantly
Reminded me
To be kind, 'cause everybody
Woke up very early
Reminded me —
III.
When we're very small, it's up and down:
We learn to stomp our feet around.
We bust our foreheads, scrape our hands;
It's only love gives us a chance.
It's love and love alone we need;
To grasp the loving giant's sleeve.
Then when we grow to greater harms,
We lean on everlasting arms.
And but so what was the thought?
"There is not, there is not, is not —"
So what is the chief end of man?
"I guess I'll do the best I can."
And what doth man's estate entail?
"The turn is sharp, and there's no rail."
In what consisteth misery?
"To close the gate on history."
What refuge for the sinner's heart?
"Don't overthink it; play the charts."
And if that secret chord don't sing?
"I know I'd buy you anything."
And if what's needed can't be bought?
"Well, I held you in the parking lot."
What doth it profit us to be?
"Patches of eternity."
Please, please, please, my dear —
"Not a question; yes, I'm here."
Where will we come awake again?
"Allwhere, always having been."
IV.
We will never not have been
We will never not have been
We will never not have been
