November 23, 1945

Perhaps best known for the "Gorgon rock" records he cut with producer Bunny Lee, reggae singer Cornel Campbell launched his career with a series of ska sides in the 1960s. As the decade ended, he helmed the Eternals, scoring hits including "Queen of the Minstrels" and "Stars," but in 1971 he again went solo after teaming with Lee, a pairing that spotlighted Campbell's distinctive falsetto to stunning effect. In 1975, he shifted from the lovers rock sensibility to the more explicitly Rastafarian approach of "Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm" and "Natural Fact," both among his biggest hits to date. While 1977's "The Investigator" heralded a successful return to lovers rock, Campbell and Lee parted ways in 1980. His career experienced a renaissance in 2005 when he joined techno-dub team Rhythm & Sound on their single "King in My Empire." He joined dub's Soothsayers for 2013's Nothing Can Stop Us.
