An experimental rock musician from Tokyo, Hiiragi Fukuda has earned an international reputation for his eclectic body of work that encompasses indie rock, pop, electronics, and abstract soundscapes. Fukuda first came to the attention of adventurous music fans as a member of the group Doronco Gumo, appearing on their album Old Punks, which was released as a limited-edition CD in 2008 and reissued on LP in 2009. Fukuda launched his solo career with a handful of 7" singles and cassettes, and his six-song cassette album My Turntable Is Sloow was released by Sloow Tapes in 2010, soon earning enthusiastic reviews from writers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe, and prompting a reissue on vinyl. The year 2011 brought another EP, The Stable at Dawn, with Fukuda handling all the instruments himself. After guesting as a guitarist on a pair of EPs by Yuka Ijichi, Fukuda delivered a new album in 2014, Seacide, with the musician conjuring beautiful but forbidding sounds on guitar, voice, theremin, and an outdated electronic keyboard. Once again released in a tiny edition by Sloow Tapes, the album became one of Fukuda's first American releases when the indie label Trouble in Mind Records brought out a U.S. edition in 2015. ~ Mark Deming
