Propelled by their namesake bandleader’s powerful yet cryptic songwriting, the Matthew Good Band became one of the key Canadian rock bands of the ‘90s thanks to their shadowy brand of alternative rock. Formed in British Columbia in 1995, the band released their independent debut, Last of the Ghetto Astronauts, that same year. They quickly established a dynamic loud-quiet-loud sound that showcased Good’s elastic voice, which is capable of both wistful falsettos and aggressive grit. Building on that record’s success, they sharpened things up production-wise and got even heavier on 1997’s Underdogs, which contained a pair of breakout singles: the ghostly “Apparitions” and explosive “Everything Is Automatic.” In 1999, Beautiful Midnight brought the band their greatest success, topping charts with the roaring, overdriven blasts of “Hello Time Bomb” and “Load Me Up.” Created in an environment of illness and infighting, 2001’s dark and sprawling Audio of Being, featuring the wall-shaking “Anti-Pop,” proved to be the band’s final record. In the wake of the breakup, Good continued on with a solo career.
