English singer and songwriter Marsha Ambrosius rose to international fame as one-half of the Grammy-nominated neo-soul duo Floetry. She’s since cultivated a successful solo career and collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B.
• Ambrosious was born in Liverpool and raised largely in London, where she met Natalie Stewart—her eventual partner in Floetry—through playing basketball. The two later attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology together.
• Ten years into their friendship, they began performing around London as Nat and Marsh. After changing their name to Floetry, they moved to Atlanta and eventually Philadelphia, where they found a home in the city’s thriving neo-soul scene.
• Before the release of Floetry’s debut album, Michael Jackson recorded “Butterflies”—cowritten by Ambrosious—for his 2001 album Invincible. It became a Top 20 hit.
• Floetry released two studio albums, scored a Top 40 hit with the 2003 single “Say Yes,” and earned five Grammy nominations before going on hiatus in 2005.
• The newly solo Ambrosius released the 2007 mixtape Neo Soul Is Dead: The Chronic Mixtape, during a stint with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records.
• She signed to J Records in 2009 and released her debut solo album, Late Nights & Early Mornings, in 2011. The LP debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and reached No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard 200.
• Her 2014 sophomore effort, Friends & Lovers, debuted at No. 2 on the R&B chart. That same year, she earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “As,” a song she recorded with R&B singer Anthony Hamilton for the soundtrack of the 2013 film The Best Man Holiday.
• Floetry reunited for tours in 2015 and 2016 but have not released any new music.
• Over the years, Ambrosius has worked with numerous rappers, including The Game, Kanye West, Talib Kweli, and Tyga.
