West Coast rap wiz Problem may have entered the music industry quietly, but an auspicious collaboration with Snoop Dogg set the pace for his meteoric rise to commercial success.
• In 2007, Problem penned a verse for his cousin Terrace Martin’s feature on Snoop Dogg’s “Be Thankful.” An impressed Snoop commissioned Problem to write on his 2008 album Ego Trippin’.
• Propelled by this collaboration, Problem founded the label Diamond Lane Music Group in 2009.
• Problem broke into the mainstream with his verse on E-40’s gold-certified 2012 single “Function,” which also features Iamsu! and YG. This solidified Problem’s place as a West Coast artist to watch.
• In 2013, he collaborated with Iamsu! on Million Dollar Afro and released his debut EP, Understand Me.
• In 2016, Problem recorded a remix of his track “My Squad” to serve as the theme song for the Los Angeles Rams’ 2016–17 season. In 2017, his single “Betta Watch Yo Self” was featured on Issa Rae’s Insecure.
• His 2017 debut album, Selfish, touches on personal topics like Problem’s experiences with religion and his son’s health challenges.
