The voice behind back-to-back 2024 hits “Katchi Sera” and “Aasa Kooda”, singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Sai Abhyankkar is a trailblazer in Indian music as the first Tamil pop star in a regional market dominated by film soundtracks. Abhyankkar, son of south Indian-language playback singers Tippu and Harini, has crafted a sound informed by the film music of his youth, along with his favourites in R&B, jazz and blues and the folk and classical music of his culture. All of these elements can be detected in the rhythmic lilt and easy hooks of his dance-friendly romantic bops. He started producing music as a tween and was barely an adult when he released his first track, 2023’s devotional “Valam Varavendum”, but Abhyankkar—who has been mentored by A.R. Rahman and works as a programmer for movie scores and songs—is clearly set up for years of success.
