With their mix of romantic and political songs, the Kenyan Afropop band Sauti Sol have become superstars in their home county and beyond.
• Founding members Bien-Aime Baraza, Delvin Mudigi, and Willis Chimano are longtime friends who sang together in a high school gospel ensemble. They formed Sauti Sol as an a cappella group and later added guitarist Polycarp Otieno.
• In Swahili, “sauti” means “voice,” while “sol” is Spanish for “sun.” The group’s name translates to “Voices of Light.”
• The group’s 2008 debut album, Mwanzo, showcases their three-part harmonies and message-driven lyrics. The song “Blue Uniform” deals with police brutality.
• As a gift to fans, Sauti Sol offered up their third album, 2015’s Live and Die in Afrika, as a free download for 48 hours.
• Sauti Sol incorporate more modern R&B and electronic influences on their fifth album, 2019 Afrikan Sauce. The LP features artists from across Africa, including Nigerian singer and rapper Burna Boy, Ugandan reggae singer Bebe Cool, and Zimbabwean singer Jah Prayzah.
