Blowing in from the serene Blue Mountains near Sydney, Cloud Control typified the late 2000s’ burgeoning indie-pop sound on early singles like 2009’s “Gold Canary”—all sighing harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and sporadic yelps. The band won the Australian Music Prize and two AIR Awards for their 2010 debut album Bliss Release, which yielded intricate earworms like “There’s Nothing in the Water We Can’t Fight.” That song was voted in at No. 18 on the year’s triple J Hottest 100 poll, eventually achieving gold sales status in Australia. Later material leaned more into saturated psychedelia, as heard on 2013’s Stone Roses-esque “Scar” and 2017’s especially trippy “Rainbow City.” As always, siblings Heidi (keyboards) and Ulrich (drums) Lenffer contribute stirring vocal harmonies alongside singer/guitarist Alister Wright, adding extra elements of uplift to Cloud Control’s already perky songwriting.
