Vybz Kartel was one of the Jamaican dancehall scene's true superstars. At the height of his career, his reach expanded to the U.S. and Europe, landing him a feature on Rihanna's debut, Music of the Sun. A string of late-'00s hits displayed his flawless rapid-fire delivery, and established him as a pioneer in the use of Auto-Tune. A former protégé of Bounty Killer, Kartel spurned his mentor's Alliance supergroup to form his own, Portmore Empire. However, he later fell on hard times, and in '14 he was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murder.
