It’s hard to imagine “Wicked Game” as a funeral dirge, but that’s just what experimental opera, industrial and noise musician Lingua Ignota does on her 2020 cover of Chris Isaak’s lovesick ballad. The classically trained singer has a talent for wringing pain out of even the simplest arrangements. Armed with a powerfully expressive voice and a churchly sense of drama, she earned her name with the eviscerating screams and liturgical air of songs like 2018’s “Woe to All (On the Day of My Wrath)”, but doleful, whisper-soft meditations like 2021’s “Perpetual Flame of Centralia” prove that she can raise goosebumps without ever raising her voice.
