In 1986 the J-rock rebels of Unicorn kick-started in Tokyo just as Japan was warming to more inventive, guitar-led rhythms. Between then and their initial split in 1993, at the height of their fame, the five-piece dropped a succession of genre-busting albums that cemented their status as rock legends. And since reuniting in 2009 with punchy, stomping, The Who-influenced hit single “WAO!”, the pioneers have only grown their audience and reputation by drawing from a wide palette of influences—ska, punk, rockabilly, classic rock and beyond.
