Riffing on the word “chanteuse” with both their band name and four female singers—including actor Tottie Goldsmith—The Chantoozies formed in Melbourne in 1986 for Goldsmith’s 24th birthday party. They released their debut single the next year, turning Redbone’s 1971 hit “The Witch Queen of New Orleans” from swampy rock into post-disco catnip. Both that and the 1988 synth-pop turn “Wanna Be Up” hit the Top 10 at home, powering the group’s playful self-titled debut before Goldsmith exited the fold. The Chantoozies’ 1991 follow-up Gild the Lily again pulled off an unlikely genre flip, transmuting Stephen Stills’ folk song “Love the One You’re With” into a pop banger shaded with funk and house. After a two-decade hiatus, their 2014 comeback “Baby It’s You” repeated that signature trick, taking an early Burt Bacharach composition and applying both modern production and an ABBA-style arrangement. It’s indicative of The Chantoozies’ lingering cachet that the song’s video featured veteran Aussie actors Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, and Anthony LaPaglia. Goldsmith’s second departure (having returned in 2012) took the lineup down to the duo of Ally Fowler and Eve von Bibra, who recruited Tim Henwood (Rogue Traders, The Superjesus) to produce 2023’s “Every Night,” a more current version of their girl-group finesse.
