Songtexte

A man sits there on a barstool
Fish swimming around in his mind
The oceans the bar top, the lights are the seagulls
And his beer swishes around like the tide
He talks to the maidens he claims to be mermaids
But really they’re singing their songs
The bar room is empty, the lights are approaching
They were sirens, along
He was looking for treasure and pleasure and riches
And searching for chests full of gold,
Marooned on this island, he believed that he found it
The barstools growing old
And he rolls in the tide and the sand
While his face hits the hard wood floor
Stumbles and grasps for the land
and he can’t make his way to the door
The bartender watches, and sees to the man
The water levels been rising and his fantasizing
Can’t be held back by any dam
She wonders if he’d been a captain
Of a vessel that's been tried and true
Or if he’s always been floating, out on the ocean
On a lifeboat without a crew
(she thinks) there he sits on a barstool
Conducting the men in his head
But the only ones watching are laughing and scoffing
at the drunk who is playing pretend
All the while the waves crash around him
As he asks for another pour
The bar room is full but he’s sitting alone
Caught in the undertow
Waiting for his rescue boat
A barstool sits unattended
And it’s been left alone for some years
It’s seen some new faces from all sorts of places but the captain, disappeared
Until a familiar face, walks back in through the door
Bright eyed and smiling, memories they come flying
From a time that he’s tried to ignore
The ship he had lost was a maiden
She was taken deep into the sea
And the captain he followed her into the darkness
And on land suffered in missouri
He picked himself up off the floor
Swam to the surface to breathe
Held on to the maiden no more
And became the man he was meant to be
