Money's everything in this society
If you don't make enough money then how are you gonna survive
Do you stress about money?
A little bit, especially with helping dad with rent and bills
Do you ever feel like you're too young to be
Helping your parents with bills and stuff?
Tell me something
What do you do when you the only one providing food?
Money be the cause, money be the root
Money be the reason we all shoot
For the heavens, for the skies
It's all the same between your eyes
When the tears fall under my disguise
Money gon' be there to drown the cries
Tell me something
Can you really really really feel it?
All of this pressure I'm concealing
Killing myself to make a killing
Just to be proud of how I'm feeling
Money gon' come but money gon' go
Gave it my all, don't act like you know
Work all my life but at my death, where will it go?
Let me tell you something
I got a thousand mouths to feed
I don't know them but they know me
Once upon a time I was the seed
Now I inherit the family tree
And all of its gifts and all of its grudges
All of its curses, all of its crutches
All of the roots for us are deep
I lean on them, they lean on me
Tell me something
Ever lived in your car for nights
Way too scared to close your eyes
So they stay wide until the light
Knife at the ready for a fight
No government check 'cause no proof of rent
No dollars spent so you make a friend
Hoping that maybe they'll house you
If maybe you'll take 'em to bed
Money is easy, money is hard
I'm counting up all these paper cuts
Man I'm proud of these scars
'Cause when my mother or baby brother
Or my sister struggling with the hustle
I'ma keep it humble knowing that I got 'em, I can do my part
Do you ever feel like you're too young to be
Helping your parents with bills and stuff?
At the age that I am now, being 21, I do feel
Like I have somewhat of a responsibility
I've been helping out with rent ever since I was maybe 16
So at that age it might have been a bit
Of a stretch but now I kinda see why
I don't mind giving money for that type of thing
Do you feel like there's a pressure to provide for the family?
Us, being children of migrants coming from a third world country
I feel like, yeah, there is somewhat of a responsibility because
Us being Filipinos, we're so tight with our family
We wanna all provide for our family
Especially the ones in the Philippines who are maybe less fortunate
And don't have those sort of opportunities that we get given
I feel maybe a little bit of pressure
Because obviously I don't earn that much
I don't get paid enough I guess
There is that little bit of pressure of like giving
Money and providing that from such a small amount of pay
But I'm still willing to help out
How do you feel if, for example, mum asked you for
Money but just because mum's our mother, would you
Give her money for the sake of her wanting money?
That's a really good question son
If I'm gonna answer honestly, I do love having a reason
I think it's because I work out of a scarcity mindset sometimes
I'm caught between two worlds here
We're taught constantly to save our
Money and build a future for ourselves
But then we come from the Philippines as well where we're
Taught that when people need you, you're there for them
It's difficult because when you're constantly giving
Money out, you don't have enough to save for your future
It's just a little tricky because when you say
You can't provide, it feels like you're masongit
Or they say maybe that you're masongit
And then it makes you feel a little bit sad and misunderstood
