Songtexte

True Thomas he lay on Huntley bank,
A ferlie he spied with his eye,
And there he saw a lady bright,
Come riding down by the Eildon tree.
Her skirt was of the grass green silk,
Her mantle of the velvet fine,
And in the strands of her horse's mane,
Fifty silver bells did shine.
True Thomas he pulled off his cap,
And bent down low all to his knee,
'All hail thou mighty Queen of Heaven,
For thy peer on earth I never did see'.
'Oh no, no Thomas', she said,
'That name does not belong to me,
I am but the Queen of fair Elfland,
Am hither come to visit thee'.
'Oh harp and carp with me Thomas' she said,
'Oh harp and carp along with me,
And if you dare to kiss my lips,
Sure of your body I will be'
'Betide me well, betide me woe,
Oh I shall never daunted be',
And soon he has kissed her ruby lips,
All underneath the Eildon tree.
'Ah you must go with me Thomas' she said,
'Ah you must go along with me,
And you must serve me seven years,
Come well or woe as may chance to be'
She's mounted on her milk white steed,
She's taken True Thomas up behind,
And when she pulls on her horse's mane,
The flew faster than the wind,
'Til living land was left behind.
They rode through red blood to the knee,
Leaving behind the pastures green,
'Til seven years were gone and passed,
True Thomas on earth was never seen.
