Now, the eviction didn't really surprise me
Not really
It was too much traffic, too many sessions
Too many people pulling up at all hours
Music blasting late nights
The apartment had become a studio before it was even a home
And eventually, the building had enough
Truth was, I was already getting tired of Oakland anyway
That city moves hella fast, too fast sometimes
Every night I felt like something was happening
Every weekend I felt the expense
Every opportunity seemed attached to another distraction
So when it ended, I packed everything up
The microphones, the computers, the speakers
Years of equipment that I worked hella hard to build
Loaded it all up and started over again
This time, I moved to Pittsburgh, California
Back to the suburbs
Well, suburbs by the Bay Area standard
But it still had rough edges though
It still had its own struggles
But compared to Oakland, it felt slower, quieter, more manageable
The biggest adjustment was the neighborhood
It was the distance
Now it's about forty-five minutes away from the scene
Forty-five minutes away from the original studio
Forty-five minutes away from the artists who used to stop by every day
And that mattered
Because the convenience is everything in music
But people loved my studio when it was around the corner
Now everybody don't wanna drive across the Bay
So naturally the traffic slowed down
Not completely
Some loyal cats still made the trip, the real ones
The people who believed in the quality more than the location
But it wasn't like before
And for the first time in a while, I felt the financial pressure again
Bills didn't care about your dream
Rent don't care about your passion
So I did what I had to do
I got another job
I clocked in, I clocked out, repeat
The same cycle I've been trying to escape for most of my life
But there was one difference this time
I wasn't abandoning music
Not even close
The studio stayed open
Every day, every night
When somebody wanted to record, I was still ready
When inspiration hit, I was already there
Because by now I understood something important
Success wasn't always about momentum
Sometimes success was simply refusing to quit
And that's exactly what I did
I refused
I refused to stop recording
I refused to stop learning
I refused to stop believing
In fact, being farther away from everybody might've helped me
Because now there were fewer distractions
Less hanging out
Less unnecessary noise
More time alone
More time to create
More time writing
More time finishing products
And then when the albums start coming
Not just songs anymore
But I start dropping albums
Complete bodies of work
Stories, experiences
Pieces of my life captured in music
One after another
The funny thing was
While everybody else thought I had taken a step backward
I was actually building
Quietly, patiently
The same way I always did
Because the dream don't always grow in crowded rooms
Sometimes they grow in silence
Sometimes they grow when nobody watching
And sitting in that living room studio in Pittsburgh
Forty-five minutes away from where all the action was at
I was becoming more productive than I had ever been
I wasn't chasing the dream anymore
I was living it
One album at a time
