Why Not?
Album - Hip-Hop, Music, Hip-Hop/Rap
On his debut album, Toronto-based singer and rapper Kofi pours his heart out, proffering introspections on love's many labyrinths. The Ghanaian-Canadian rapper, singer and songwriter has earned nods from OVO Sound, Kardinal Offishall, and Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire. Given the trap-infused 12 tracks that make up Why Not?, it’s easy to understand their testament to his talent. Memories of a departed lover driving him to zombie status (“Haunt Me”) morph into moments of reflection: “I watched you change up and I put that on me”, he confesses on “On Me”. The theme of yearning spills over into "Be Be", where existential concerns about contemporary love (“If I went broke, would you be my baby”) champion raw emotion, layered with incisive percussion. But "Shut Down" reconfigures the second half of the album, as Kofi’s uber-confident rapper braggadocio seeps through and he tells gripping stories of rolling through life like dice and emerging as a diamond from the rough.
