Listening to the sensitively shaped, beguilingly phrased, deftly articulated, interpretatively exhilarating, technically immaculate playing of Ensemble Diderot, directed with scintillating flair by violinist Johannes Pramsohler, is to be reminded just how far historically informed playing has come since its tentative beginnings back in the 1950s. As the title suggests, this is music that either might have or, in fact, did travel extremely well during the Baroque period, including an early version of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, which differs in innumerably subtle ways (not least the solo harpsichord cadenza) from the familiar revision. Also included are recorded premieres of two violin concertos by the highly underrated Johann Georg Pisendel, whose specialty was especially lovely slow movements, although perhaps the greatest discovery is Carlo Paolo Durant’s enchanting Concerto in C Major in an unconventional four movements.
