It's become increasingly difficult to find new and original ways to convey the intensity of ending a relationship or getting dumped. So the U.K. punk-pop quintet You Me At Six chose to craft songs that are more catchy than clever, which totally works. “The Consequence” opens Hold Me Down with contagious guitar riffs before singer Josh Franceschi jumps in singing with a voice that’s holding back so much emotion, his inflections quiver and shake before blowing up in the chorus. By the refrain on “Underdog” it’s evident that Franceschi has a knack for spinning vengeance into cathartic gold — what’s easily the catchiest song here is anchored by memorable melodies with barbed lyrics that jab at his anti-muse by cruelly promising that they’ll never be friends again. “Liquid Confidence” is another standout. It’s a dipsomaniacal power ballad with lyrics revealing how there’s really no pride in breaking up with someone right before they beat you to it.
