Listen to God by Rebecca St. James
Rebecca St. James
God
Album - Christian, Music, Christian Rock, Gospel, CCM
At once morally rigorous and inescapably catchy, Rebecca St. James’ God ranks among the best-realized Christian music albums of the 1990s. At age 19, St. James was already an experienced singer/songwriter when she recorded these tracks, and as the album’s title indicates, she had a clear and direct message of faith to impart to her audience. But what might not be known to the uninitiated is how captivating her music is — St. James matches her passionate evangelism with a boldly-rendered rock/techno-dance sound. Producer Tedd T. frames her with a bracing mix of slamming drums, distorted guitars and tightly-woven harmonies. The muscular grooves and instrumental bite heard in the title track, “You’re The Voice,” and “Carry Me High” are balanced by the more reflective reverence of “Go And Sin No More” and “Speak To Me.” St. James’ vocals are as assertive as the music, accented with dramatic slurs, growls and whispers. Most of all, St. James succeeds in expressing her rapturous devotion to Christ without a hint of compromise. God is strong stuff, both as a statement of belief and as galvanizing, ear-grabbing music.
