Delta David Gier is the music director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from the University of Michigan’s conducting school with a master’s degree, Gier completed an apprenticeship with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Riccardo Muti. Gier has been internationally active as a guest conductor and as associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Also known for working with Indigenous American musicians and composers through his Lakota Music Project, Gier has made several recordings, including John Luther Adams: An Atlas of Deep Time with the South Dakota Symphony, released in 2024.
