Artist Biography
b. 29 May 1936, Dublin, Eire. A great lover of pseudonyms, Lee began her career touring Ireland under the billing ‘Child Star’. In 1956, she made her recording debut with ‘The Outskirts Of Paris’ and by the end of the decade had joined the Squadronaires showband. After several years on the road, she married musician Len Beadle in 1963 and together they formed Jackie And The Raindrops. Two years later, she went solo again for the tear-jerker, ‘I Cry Alone’. In 1967, she was relaunched as Emma Rede but failed with ‘Just Like A Man’. By now, she had recorded for Columbia Records, Decca Records, Polydor Records and CBS Records, but it was with Philips that she finally found chart success courtesy of ‘White Horses’, the theme from a UK children’s television series. The single was recorded under the name Jacky and its success coincided with a serious assault on the US market via film soundtrack recordings. Most notable among these was Lee’s contribution to the 1968 film Barbarella, in which she sang over the credits. Dismissed as a 60s one-hit-wonder, she defied the odds by signing to her umpteenth label, Pye, reverting to her real name and winning through with yet another children’s song, ‘Rupert’, in 1971.
