It’s only natural for bands to reinvent themselves after a handful of albums, which is exactly what Boy & Bear did on their self-titled, self-produced and self-released fifth LP in 2023. “This album does feel like a little bit of a rebirth for us,” guitarist Killian Gavin told Apple Music, also citing the integration of more electronic elements due to demoing individually during lockdown. As for the wider Boy & Bear story, it begins in Sydney in 2009, with the solo work of airy-voiced singer-guitarist Dave Hosking. After coalescing around that creative nucleus, the group broke through with a folky 2010 take on Crowded House’s “Fall At Your Feet” before making an even bigger splash with their debut album the following year. Moonfire and its lead single “Feeding Line” earned the band five ARIA Awards in 2011. While that was a hard act to follow, 2013’s Harlequin Dream traded in some of the band’s more rustic sensibilities to embrace classic California rock, topping the Australian album chart. Synths came to the fore on 2015’s Limit of Love, with Hosking devoting more and more lyrics to his battle with chronic dysbiosis on 2019’s Suck on Light. And after deploying moodier programmed textures on the aforementioned Boy & Bear, the band teamed with electronic project Boo Seeka for a trio of spacious singles that hinted at further exploration.
