Cellist and composer Clancy Newman has developed innovative playing techniques in a set of works based on popular songs. He has performed widely with orchestras and several chamber groups. Newman made his recording debut in 2007 on the album Here of Amazing Most Now by composer Gerald Levinson. He has been a member of the Weiss-Kaplan-Newman Trio (with pianist Yael Weiss and violinist Mark Kaplan), which released an album of piano trios by Brahms and Smetana in 2011 and the recital An American Tour in 2014. Newman made his solo debut in 2023, accompanied by pianist Natalie Zhu, on the album From Method to Madness: The American Sound; that album included Newman's own title track.
