Saxophonist/composer James Brandon Lewis performs and records in a variety of settings, from duos, trios, and quartets to big-band groups, as both a sideman and a bandleader. In 2019, he formed a quartet with pianist Aruan Ortiz and his trio with drummer Chad Taylor (a longtime collaborator) and ubiquitous veteran bassist Brad Jones. Their sound crosses post-bop, modal, spiritual jazz, and structured improvisation, all figured in to Lewis' formal compositions. The group's debut album, Molecular, appeared in 2020 (their only album recorded in the U.S., the rest were cut in Switzerland). Code of Being followed in 2021, and in 2022 they released the double-length MSM Molecular Systematic Music - Live (cut in studio in front of an invited audience). In 2024, the studio outing Transfiguration appeared; it had been recorded 18 months previous. Lewis' quartet returned in May 2025 with the all-original ballads outing Abstraction Is Deliverance.
