Some may call North London artist JayO the lover boy of the UK’s bustling Afrobeats community. The breezy, self-produced “22” is his breakout hit, but his catalog is stocked with sultry songs that capture the essence of young love. Born in 1999, JayO got his first lessons on music theory in church and fostered his love of music via his family—including the songs on his sister’s iPod and intermittent vacations to his native Nigeria. He began making music with his friend RZ at age 12, and steadily developed his craft through the 2010s. In 2023, his viral single “22” drew attention to his mesh of Afrobeats with R&B, dancehall, and hip-hop, while the lovelorn “Obsessed” exemplifies how he imbues the fun-loving scene with a dose of yearning. His range of talent led him to sign a deal with 0207 Def Jam in 2023, which will amplify his talent worldwide.
