The Kymi Sinfonietta is owned jointly by two small Finnish cities, Kotka and Kouvola, but has an international reach. Its dual municipal ownership scheme is unique in Finland and very rare internationally. The Kymi Sinfonietta was formed on January 1, 1999, after a merger of the municipal orchestras of Kotka and Kouvola, small cities about 30 miles apart in eastern Finland, near the Russian border. Juha Nikkola served as artistic director from 1999 to 2003. Under Nikkola, the Sinfonietta released its first album, featuring the Rhapsodie of Uumo Klami, in 2003. Since 2018, the orchestra has had an artistic advisor, Olari Elts. The orchestra returned to the recording studio in 2008 for the album Uuno Klami: KymiScenes, and in 2023 with a recording of the violin and cello concertos of Kalevi Aho.
