Brazilian singer/songwriter Nina Maia puts a postmodern spin on the time-honored tradition of “MPB” (música popular brasileira, a cross-pollination of samba and bossa nova with Western influences) by combining her homeland’s traditional rhythms with minimalist arrangements and instrumentation that wouldn’t sound out of place on an American pop album. Maia made her debut on a striking cover of “I Will Survive” for the 2018 feature film Todas as Canções de Amor, and spent the 2020s building up a collection of original material, releasing a full-length, INTEIRA, in 2024.
