b. 1916, Free Hill, Tennessee, USA. A jack of all trades when not playing music, Garrett has resided for most of his life in Free Hill, an isolated community founded by freed slaves around 1830. He recorded a splendid electric blues single for Excello Records in 1962, and played occasional festivals from the 80s, by which time he was the only performer in Free Hill of the live music that had been otherwise supplanted by disco and cable television. His music included a few originals, which often employed a talking blues structure, but consisted largely of blues standards by the likes of Little Milton and T-Bone Walker, and country music by artists such as Don Williams and Merle Haggard, adapted to blues formats.
