Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 combines two generations of Afrobeat musicians led by the alto sax-playing son of Fela Kuti. After the elder man died in 1997, Seun fulfilled a promise to his father and became head of Egypt 80. They didn't release an album until 2008's Many Things. After constant touring, they issued 2011's From Africa with Fury: Rise and 2014's A Long Way to the Beginning on Knitting Factory Records. They released the EP Struggle Sounds for Sony in 2016. The band entered Jet Studio in Brussels while touring Europe and emerged with 2018's Grammy-nominated Black Times. As Egypt 80 toured well into 2019, they cut and released a Night Dreamer Direct-to-Disc Session. Meanwhile, Time Magazine selected Kuti as one of its "100 Most Influential People." 2024's Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head) included guest spots by Damian Marley and Sampa the Great.
