About Steve Turre
Arguably the most visible trombonist of the 20th and 21st centuries, Steve Turre is a jazz musician who transcends the genre. He was influenced early on by his Mexican-American heritage, salsa bands, and tenures with Ray Charles and Art Blakey. Turre absorbs and imparts inspiration from every context he works in, especially his tenure with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Saturday Night Live band. He introduced conch shells as a musical instrument in jazz on 1993's Sanctified Shells. His three albums for Verve -- Rhythm Within (1995), Steve Turre (1997), and Lotus Flower (1999) -- are revered among jazz trombonists. The Spirits Up Above, his High Note label debut, made the jazz album charts. In 2015 he issued the widely acclaimed, Spirit People, his debut for Smoke Sessions. 2024's Sanyas, the first live offering of his career. ~ Mark Keresman
